California Road Trip

Reflection portrait

Summer vacation is a sweet thing, I highly recommend it. A friend from England Ellen flew in last Friday, and we’ve been touring California for a week. Starting in Pasadena, we drove up the coast, wandered around San Francisco and the wine country. We fried in the Yosemite Valley (it was 110 degrees), hit the Eastern Sierra (the ghost town of Bodie is pictured above – you can see the hotel’s pool table through the window, then me and Ellen in the reflection). We’re now in Vegas after dodging a brush fire that jumped Highway 395. Yikes!

Ellen’s only previous experience it the US was a week in New York City. It’s fun to see my favorite state through new eyes. And traveling with her is bringing back my British vocabulary (we met when I studied in England in 2001), and now I can’t stop saying things like ‘cheers’ instead of ‘thank you.’

We’ve still got a few days in Vegas, and will spend my birthday looking over a little hole in the ground called the Grand Canyon. We’ll polish off vacation with a few more beach days in LA … yes!
